The flowers, which measure 2 inches in diameter, have a unique appearance with frilly, flat lavender-blue petals surrounding a paler, dome-shaped center cushion that is adorned with protruding stamens, resembling pins in a pincushion. The blooms are produced individually on strong stems, while the finely dissected, grayish-green foliage creates a pleasing background.
