Banana plants can be grown in southern Ontario, as the climate here isn’t naturally suited to tropical species. It’s best to keep them in containers so they can be moved indoors during the cold months. They thrive in warm, humid conditions and need bright, indirect sunlight—placing them near a south-facing window or using grow lights works well. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and feed them with a balanced liquid fertiliser every few weeks during the growing season. In summer, they can enjoy the outdoors once night-time temperatures stay above 15°C, but should return inside before autumn. During winter, reduce watering, stop feeding, and protect them from cold drafts and dry air—regular misting or a humidifier helps. With attention to their seasonal needs, banana plants can grow beautifully even in Ontario’s temperamental climate.
