Asclepias tuberosa, also known as butterfly weed, is a perennial native to Missouri that can be found in dry and rocky environments such as forests, prairies, and roadsides. This species is unique in that its stems do not contain milky sap. As the flowers fade, they are replaced by spindle-shaped seed pods (ranging from 3-6 inches) that burst open to release numerous silky seeds carried by the wind. With a long blooming season from late spring to the end of summer, the nectar from these flowers attracts not only hummingbirds and butterflies, but also a variety of other pollinators. Additionally, the leaves serve as a vital food source for monarch butterfly larvae, or caterpillars.
