Carpinus caroliniana, commonly known as Blue Beech or American Hornbeam, is an attractive deciduous tree with a slow-growing, globular form. Perfect for a shady understory, it typically grows 20-35' tall and it is a native tree, often found in rich moist woods, valleys, and ravine bottoms. This adaptable native tree can also be used in urban sites. The distinctively fluted trunk and larger branches of a mature tree gives rise to the common name of Musclewood. Flowers appear in spring with male and female catkins, followed by clusters of winged nutlets. Dark green leaves with serrated, elliptic-oval shapes make this tree a great choice for adding privacy to your yard.
