Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a tall, tropical herb with slender, arching leaves and a strong citrus scent. It’s well known for its culinary uses in Asian cuisine, but also valued for its natural mosquito-repelling properties. The plant contains citronella oil, which helps mask the scents that attract mosquitoes. Simply growing lemongrass in pots around a patio can offer some mild protection, especially when the leaves are brushed or crushed to release their aroma. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and although not frost-hardy in the UK, it can be grown outdoors in summer and brought indoors or into a greenhouse before the first frost. With its refreshing scent and graceful form, lemongrass is both practical and attractive for summer patios.
