Bulb Planting: The Basics
After a long winter season there is nothing more exciting in the garden than seeing your first bulbs emerge out of the spring soil!
In order for this to happen spring flowering bulbs need to be planted in the fall.
Not to worry, bulb planting is simple! Follow our tips below to enjoy your very own spring show!
- The best time for planting is typically begins late September and continues through November when the soil temperature is around eight degrees. Planting when it is too warm can trigger early growth. (After you purchase your bulbs store them in a dry place between ten and twenty degrees until you are ready to plant.)
- As with most plants, choose a location with well-drained soil and the proper exposure. Then simply plant pointy side up, in a hole that is two-three times deeper than the bulb, cover with soil, mulch and water well.
- We enjoy planting our bulbs in clusters rather than rows, it creates a wonderful spring display in the garden!

- We plant a cluster of different bulbs which bloom at the same time for a spring bouquet-like display.
- We plant a cluster of bulbs which bloom at different times to lengthen the display.
