A BRN Spring Perennial Favourite: Hellebores

Hellebores are a favourite at BRN because they are happily waiting for us under winter’s
blanket! These beautiful, hardy and long-lived perennial are a welcome sign that spring
is truly near.

One of our favourite things to do with Hellebores are to combine them with
other spring favourites in containers to enjoy before planting them into the garden. Try
planting them with other spring-hardy perennials such as Lungwort, Primrose, Sedge,
Candy Tuff. As well as, classic spring-hardy annuals such as Pansies, Violas, Ranunculus,
Stock.

When the ground becomes workable Hellebores love to live in almost woodland-type environments. Plant them where they have a rich, well-draining soil which is moist. Typically, Hellebores enjoy a full to part shade exposure, however, there are different varieties and some of them can tolerate sun. Hellebores require little maintenance. They benefit from regular composting (like most of your garden plants). They like their evergreen leaves to remain intact all winter long, in spring simply remove any damaged leaves and watch their stunning display.
